Course Description: Nature of Language & Language Acquisition introduces the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts (e.g. structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development in first and second language acquisition) and application of linguistics in reading and writing development. Students develop a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and apply it in real-world educational settings.
Reflection: This course was a tough one since I had no clue about linguistics. At the beginning of this course I was unsure what I was going to learn and everyone I knew would tell me linguistics was somewhat hard. After the first weeks, I was scared because of how fast we were moving but when we took the first test I was impressed that it was not as hard as some people said it would be. The second part of the course was my favorite. I loved learning about phonology and everything about that was exciting and new to me. The semantics and syntax was also one of my favorites. I loved doing the trees. This course has let me to the basics of linguistics and it has made a path to my changed major. Although, I do not know much about the Communicative Sciences and Disorders major, I know that linguistics will be an enormous part of the basics. Furthermore, I hope to learn more about linguistics and continue to use everything I learned in this course. I am extremely grateful to have taken this course with Paoze. I can definitely notice he enjoys teaching this course and knows a lot about linguistics. One day, I hope to be able to help those who have trouble speaking and thanks to this course it will be an easier ride once I get in to my Masters for Speech Language Pathology. Below I attached the Language Analysis Project I did along with my partner, Juana Palma, where we analyzed someone who's second language is English. Proud to say we received an A+ in the project.
