I remember hearing my sister she was studying Spanish and I could not believe she was studying a language she already knew. I would make fun of her major and would always question why she was doing that. During my years at community college I took a course in Spanish and could not believe I did not know how to write in Spanish. The professor made me fall in love with Spanish. That is why I decided to major in Spanish Language and Culture.
My initial goal was to just learn the basics of Spanish and that is it. Later on, I learned the Spanish Language was full of history and hidden gems I never knew about. I have learned how the language came to be, why there is Arabic influence, the reason why some speak it differently, where the accents go and much more. As for my initial goal it completely changed. I now want to be a Speech Language Pathologist. I also want to educate those who are ashamed of speaking Spanish why they should not be. The reason I want to be a SLP is because of the course LING 392 course I took here at CSUMB. The professor, Paoze, taught us everything there is to know about the basic linguistics. I fell in love with the phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicons.
The areas I am most proud of is the grammar area. I love putting accents, learning the reason behind them and everything that goes along with it. I was horrible at first. I did not get how or why you had to put a mark in some words and not in others. But throughout the weeks of first learning about this I became conscious and now I care a lot about the mark (accent). I remember how at the beginning I would overanalyze every single word and see if there was accent missing.
I wish to further develop more on the linguistics area as well as the literature. In the linguistics are I hope to learn the punctuation, the order of words, etc. In the literature are I want to read more books from Latino/Hispanic/Chicano authors. Read the classic books from famous authors, such as, Don Quijote. Thanks to the classes I took here I know have more knowledge on all of these aspects but there is yet so much more I need to learn.
